Cyon Research announced today that Melanie Mitchell, an expert in complex systems, will give the
Friday keynote at COFES 2017: The Congress On the Future of Engineering Software. COFES 2017 is being held
in Scottsdale, Arizona, April 6-9 at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort.
This year at COFES 2017, attendees will take a deep dive into Complexity and Transformation. The growth of complexity is presenting businesses with
new and difficult challenges — from the constantly changing business environment to conflicting requirements of more complex products that must be
delivered more simply to the customer. New phenomena result from complexity, often requiring consideration of things that were not previously an issue.
Rather than focus on how to design complex systems from scratch, COFES 2017 will challenge attendees to focus on interventions that can transform existing
systems to mitigate the effects of complexity.
In her keynote "An Introduction to Complexity" Mitchell will take participants on a tour of the sciences of complexity, a broad set of efforts that seek to
explain how large-scale complex, organized, and adaptive behavior can emerge from simple interactions among a myriad of individual components. Based on her
work at the Santa Fe Institute, Mitchell brings clarity to the workings of complexity across a broad
range of biological, technological, and social phenomena.

Melanie Mitchell is Professor of Computer Science at Portland State University and External Professor and Member of the Science Board at the Santa Fe Institute.
She attended Brown University, where she majored in mathematics and did research in astronomy. She also attended the University of Michigan, where she received a Ph.D.
in computer science. Her dissertation, in collaboration with her advisor Douglas Hofstadter, was the development of Copycat, a computer program that makes analogies.
She has held faculty or professional positions at the University of Michigan, the Santa Fe Institute, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the OGI School of Science and
Engineering, and Portland State University. She is the author or editor of five books and over 80 scholarly papers in the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive
science, and complex systems. Her most recent book, Complexity: A Guided Tour, won the 2010 Phi Beta Kappa Science Book Award.
